Blocked drains can be extremely difficult to deal with, and often seems to happen out of the blue. In most instances, a blocked drain isn’t something you can fix yourself and would require the services of a local Central Coast plumber.
Here are some of the most common reasons why your drains are blocked, as well as what you can do to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again as much as possible.
Tree and plant roots are one of the most common causes of blocked drains. As they grow, their roots spread out further over time. Tree roots can grow out as far as the branches above ground do. Some roots are stronger than others and can break through a pipe causing a blockage.
If this happens, the blockage will need to be cleared by a qualified plumber, and the broken pipe will need to be replaced or re-lined depending on the circumstances.
For future prevention, it’s worth considering how a plant or tree will grow in the long term and allow for plenty of space for roots to grow when planting.
Disposing of toiletries down the drain is very common and clogs up pipes and sewers. Baby wipes, makeup tissues, feminine hygiene products and similar items do not dissolve like toilet paper and can easily lodge somewhere along a pipe and cause a blockage. This is particularly true for those products that absorb water and enlarge.
These types of toiletries should always be disposed of in the bin, not the toilet. This is also much better for the environment!
If the blockage isn’t too bad, you may be able to shift it with a plunger. If this doesn’t work, it’s time to call your local Central Coast plumber who will be able to clear it with a water jetter.
3. Foreign objects
There are numerous foreign objects that can get stuck in your pipes, it could be anything from food remains to kids toys! It’s easy to accidentally drop things down the drain and cause a blockage.
To prevent these types of blockages, ensure any food remains are disposed of properly into the bin instead of down the drain, and look out for things being accidentally dropped down the drain by the kids!
Unless the item is still within reach, you’ll generally need a plumber to find and remove the object causing the blockage, and to repair any damage that’s been caused. Severe blockages can break your pipes leading to water damage through your property.
4. Damaged / broken pipes
Pipes can break due to natural wear and tear as well as tree roots, and broken pipes make it much more likely that you’ll experience a blocked drain. There isn’t much you can do about breaks from wear and tear, and it can also be hard to find the cause yourself as it’s often underground.
This is where your local Central Coast plumber can help! We use the latest technology in CCTV cameras and locators to find the location and cause of the problem. We can then recommend the best way to fix the issue and prevent it from happening again.
5. Poor pipe installation
When plumbing isn’t installed correctly, it can cause problems with blocked drains in the future. It can be tempting to save money and try to install pipes yourself, however this can often backfire and be more costly down the track. Pipes not installed correctly can cause water flow problems, fractured pipes, blockages, among other things.
Plumbing should always be installed by a licensed plumber, guaranteeing the job is done properly and meets industry standards.
6. Grease Build-up
Like hair in bathroom drains, grease and fat can also build up and clog your drains, usually in the kitchen sink due to grease from food. Cooking grease, e.g. from fatty foods, hardens as it cools. If it’s inside your pipes when it cools, it can stick to the walls and build up until water can no longer flow through.
To remove the grease, chemical or DIY cleaners will often be enough, but won’t always work for heavier blockages. If the build-up is too much, you may need a plumber to unblock it for you.
To avoid the problem in the future, wait until grease cools and then throw it into the bin instead of down the drain.
A build up of hair blocking a drain is another very common cause of a blocked drain. Even if your hair is short, it can build up over time, although it’s a more common issue for people with longer hair. When the hair isn’t too far down the pipe, it’s easy to remove, but once it’s gone out of reach it becomes much more difficult.
A tool such as a drain spider can be helpful in the first instance, but be careful with using other tools or chemicals as unfortunately they can make the problem worse! Drain cleaners can often dissolve hair, especially products specifically designed for that purpose. If you can’t reach the hair by hand and the other tools or chemicals haven’t worked either, then it’s time to call your local Central Coast blocked drains specialist.
To prevent this type of build-up in future, you can install a drain catcher in your bathtub and/or shower.
8. Natural debris
This is most common after a major storm or a lot of rain. Stormwater and sewer pipes can become flooded with the extra rain water, while leaves, soil and other debris can be washed into the pipes. Where there is an overflow in gutters and downpipes, it’s likely there’s a blockage. There is very little you can do to avoid this other than keeping outdoor areas as neat and tidy as possible to prevent these things from finding their way into your drains. Taking the time to regularly clear out your gutters to remove leaves etc can also help.
You’ll generally need a specialist plumber to clear this kind of blockage for you with a water jetter.
